If you like live music with its roots in America, you’re going to love the 2006 version of An Appalachian Summer Festival. During the month of July, the festival will bring such musical luminaries as Doc Watson, Sam Bush, Arlo Guthrie, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Buckwheat Zydeco, John Michael Montgomery and Cowboy Crush to Boone.

The Appalachian State University Department of Cultural Affairs announced the list of Appalachian Summer events this week through its website and will be releasing a more detailed press statement about its 2006 festival later in March.

The music begins on July 1st with a special “bluegrass and more” concert featuring Doc Watson and the Sam Bush Band at Farthing Auditorium. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will appear at Farthing on July 15th and Arlo Guthrie brings his special “Guthrie Family Legacy Tour,” featuring his daughter Sarah Lee Guthrie and musical partner Johnny Irion, to town on July 22nd.

New Orleans native and Cajun music king Buckwheat Zydeco will take the stage with some rousing accordion-led tunes on July 26th.

An Appalachian Summer’s festival-ending fireworks concert at Kidd Brewer Stadium will feature John Michael Montgomery and Cowboy Crush on July 29th.

In addition to the popular musical acts coming to the Appalachian State campus this July, the festival will feature plenty of classical music, two internationally renowned dance companies, silent auctions, wine tastings, new art exhibits at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts, and the 20th Annual Rosen Outdoor Sculpture competition.

Lovers of jazz will rejoice to hear that two outstanding groups—the Marcus Belgrave Octet and the John Jorgenson Quintet—are slated to perform at An Appalachian Summer 2006. The Marcus Belgrave Octet will stage “A Louis Armstrong Tribute” on July 3rd at Farthing Auditorium and the John Jorgenson Quintet will bring their exciting “Gypsy Jazz Jam” to Valborg Theatre on July 21st.

Tickets for all Appalachian Summer 2006 events will go on sale at Farthing Auditorium beginning Friday, March 3rd. For more information, call (828) 262-4046.
