Answer

A few years ago, Spruce Pine declared itself "Home of the Perfect Christmas Tree".  You'll see this designation during the Christmas parade, on the Christmas decorations, and even in the "Perfect Christmas Tree" store on Upper Street.  The name was invented by the business associations in town to promote sales in downtown stores during the Christmas period.  There are two reasons behind the name:

1.  Spruce Pine and the surrounding area are major sources of Christmas trees.

2.  More importantly, the name comes from the book, "The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree" by Gloria Houston  (and illustrated by Barbara Cooney).  Dr. Houston, a well-established author and educator, is from neighboring Avery County and is involved and associated with the Spruce Pine promotion.  She has, in the past, been the grand marshal of the Christmas Parade.

In 2006, ornaments from the Perfect Christmas Tree store (created by local artisans) were selected by First Lady Laura Bush to decorate the White House Christmas Tree.  If you are interested in seeing the ornaments (or even purchasing some), you can visit the Home of the Perfect Christmas Tree site (http://www.homeoftheperfectchristmastree.org).
