Why is everything called "Mayland"?

Mayland is term used to describe the tri-county area of Mitchell, Avery and Yancey counties (all in NC).  The MAY part of the term is an acronym built from the first letters of the three county names.

Since all three counties are small, they often cooperate in civic and other affairs.  For example, Mayland Community College is a joint venture of all three counties.

The term is also popular with businesses ranging from general stores to landscaping.
